Honkbal: Baseball in the Netherlands (working title)

HONKBAL: BASEBALL IN THE NETHERLANDS takes us on the journey of a top-level baseball, excuse me, “honkbal” team, and it’s players through a Dutch summer. The project will feature current, former, and future MLB ball players in addition to exploring the game in the Netherlands.

Baseball in the Netherlands has a long, yet almost anonymous existence to many people outside of the Dutch Kingdom (and to many inside of it as well). The Honkbal Hoofdklasse, which is the Dutch premier league, is considered without question the best in Europe.

By European standards, the Netherlands reign supreme in baseball. Out of the thirty-two European Baseball Championships held, the Netherlands have been crowned king twenty times, along with eight second place finishes. As a testament to their dominance, they have never finished lower than second in this tournament.

When involved in other international competitions, the Honkbalers have shown that they can hold their own against powerful American, Caribbean, and Asian squads. With their recent success in the World Baseball Classic, including two wins against the MLB All Star laden Dominican Republic team, fans all around the baseball world are starting to pay attention.

So it makes me wonder: what is Honkbal all about?????

Looking to remake project in 2012

In our attempt to make this project in 2010, we unfortunately ran into several roadblocks that derailed the project before it's completion. I would like to note that everyone who put money into the project retrieved their investment.

Having spent the summer in the Netherlands was not a failure. We learned quite a bit about Dutch baseball, made very strong contacts with domestic crew and production services, met and have maintained relationships with many important people and players in Dutch (and European) baseball, and it allowed us to gain a better perspective on the baseball scene in Holland to strengthen our new story.

This past Fall, the Dutch have stunned the baseball world by capturing the World Cup of baseball in Panama.

Great topic for a film

I'm an American fan of European baseball and when you tell American fans, who are VERY immersed in the game here in the US that there is a long history of baseball overseas, and that the Netherlands team is among the world leaders, they are skeptical or confused. It would be great to include in the film the "person in the street" reactions to learning about the Dutch baseball story.

In any case, it would be an interesting hook, in my opinion, to include some insight into why someone in the Netherlands even cares about the sport, and what they hope they can achieve, from just having fun to possible making it to the big leagues some day.

I hope the film gets made - wish I could contribute some $ but I cannot...
