Mystery Flight Independent Film
In December of 1969, at a small Midwestern airport, a handcuffed awol soldier was shuttled onto the flight of his life. On board were three military police and a couple dozen shackled to their seats and possibly all Latino, all freshly groomed, all spec 4s or spec 5s.
Outside, the snow was still falling from a record snowfall and one runway had been cleared. As the plane, a twin engine prop job, started taxiing out the radio crackled out "pilot you are not cleared to fly, your wings are brushing the snowbanks". With an expletive the pilot curtly began his take off. All seemingly went well until over the mountains of Colorado when first one and then the other engine flamed out After tense moments trying to restart them the pilot announced we were "going in". The same silence that was strangely present from the beginning still hung heavily in the cabin.
With the distraught pilot now out of his seat and heading to the rear of the plane. The young awol sprang to his feet toward the MP's asking them to uncuff him and the mysterious others. They stood there motionless with one paging thru the papers on his clip board. The plane suddenly erupting in prayers and furiosly fingered rosaries. "If anyone here is more than an awol leave him cuffed , but someone has got to get down this mountain" {whose snow covered peak was now coming ominously into view thru the windshield The awol.
All of a sudden as if in unison the three MPs quickly removed his cuffs and the chain that connected the others. The aisle was now full of kneeling and praying soldiers. The awol picked his route through them to the pilot while urging the frightened GI's to pray in their seats and prepare to crash.
His arm NOW around the distraught pilot he spoke up as if to encourage the others. This is bullshit!,those engines have had time to clear, get back up there and try it once more. The trance broken and most of the aisle now clear the pilot complied...........the story did not end there..I know I was that awol soldier!
