Daniel Brophy is a composer of orchestral, chamber, and solo concert works, as well as a performer of extreme metal and noise. In the realm of music for media, he has written, performed and recorded music for short films and animations, often collaborating with the director. For these scores he utilizes a combination of live recording techniques, scoring for ensembles, and MIDI implementation.

He has also written and arranged orchestral introductions for the local Toronto black metal group by the name of Strings of Ares, and co-wrote a television commercial for a ski resort by the name of Snow Valley in Edmonton.

Much of his work revolves around the combination of urban and academic musics, and the development of instruments that react to movement and gesture giving his music a distinct personality. He has performed internationally with these instruments in Lausanne (Switzerland), Ann Arbour, Vancouver, Toronto, and most currently as a headliner for Calgary’s Soundasaurus festival. He is a recipient of the 2013 Toronto Harp Society and 2012 KW Chamber Orchestra composition prizes, a SSHRC research grant, University of Alberta’s President’s Award of Distinction, and a Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship. He is currently a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Alberta and a member of the performance outfits: 30 immolated; 16 returned, The Old Granny and Terry Cloth, MUGBAIT, and the Toronto collective The Toy Piano Composers.
